Understanding Rectified Tile: Should You Buy it?

As a rule, we select the tiles based on their size, materials and colors. But when you hear the word solid tile, what comes to mind? Some buyers may question the meaning of this term, but it is very common in the tile industry.

Here you will find information about tile adhesive to help you make the best purchasing decision.

A. What is a certified tile?

Crowntiles.co.uk certified tile?

Certified tiles are tiles (usually clay-based) that have straight edges through precision grinding or cutting. This process is common for ceramic or porcelain tiles and is usually performed by manufacturers prior to firing. Up close, you can see that the edges of the tiles are smooth and straight.

You will see the difference between directional and non-directional tiles when you place them. A straight tile floor has an almost seamless surface.

The lines that are normally visible between the tiles are made thinner by the smooth, straight edges. However, a seamless appearance is not the only goal when straightening tiles.

B. Reasons for producing certified tiles

It’s not just because manufacturers produce tiles with straight edges that the seamless look is most important. This process is used to create more uniform sizes of ceramics or tiles. Because they are clay-based, they must be baked to harden their texture.

The burning process sometimes causes slight deformations or changes in the size of these individual stories. To reduce this inconsistency, cutting is done at the sharp end.

Another reason for making such tiles is the ease of installation. Inconsistent dimensions can lead to installation problems, especially if the space has awkward angles. The grinding process creates standard tile sizes that you can find according to the requirements of your project.

C. Dimensions of tiles and certified tiles

The value of a certified tile also reflects the size of the joints. Straight edges make it easier for the installer to make small connection lines.

Typical joint line sizes range from 1.5 mm to 3 mm. The 3mm lines give a subtle look, but the lines are still visible, although not as noticeable as regular tiles (which often have muted edges due to large grout lines).

If you want to achieve an almost seamless appearance, lay the tiles with 1.5 mm wide joints. It can be difficult to achieve a perfect assembly result with a grout line of this size, especially if you are not a professional.

Contact a commercial installer for this task, especially if the tile store offers an installation service as a bonus purchase.

D. Advantages and disadvantages of certified tiles

Do you need to lay straight tiles? Whether you use rectified or ceramic tiles, you need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of these tiles.

1. Benefits of certified tiles

  • Provides a soft, almost seamless look suitable for modern home furnishings
  • Straight edges and joint lines, ideal for a clean look.
  • Ideal for small and large spaces

2. Certified tile ratio

  • More difficult to lay than normal tiles, especially with small joints.
  • Not suitable for uneven wall or floor surfaces
  • which tend to flake off, especially in the corners.
  • Only available in certain sizes (standard minimum size is 300×300 mm).

Certified tiles are generally more expensive than regular tiles. However, the price also depends on other factors such as. B. the size, quality of materials, colors, and additional services you may have to pay for.

E. Tips for installingcertified tiles

Certified tiles can be difficult to install, so most people prefer a professional service. But if you have an offer, why not try it yourself?

Here are a few tips for a perfectly aligned tile installation at home:

1. Control of moisture movement

The floor sometimes shows signs of efflorescence – moisture slowly rising through the concrete or cement slabs. This can lead to stains and white spots between the joints after the tiles are laid.

You can solve the problem with an acidic wax (soil quality), a special cleaner with a balanced pH and the application of an impermeable layer.

2. Make sure the base is flat

Underlayment is the term used to describe the flat layer directly beneath the exterior cladding. This layer acts as a stabilizer, supporting the outer layer and ensuring an even finish.

However, before laying the straightened boards, your subfloor must first be level. It’s important, especially if the tiles are large.

3. Formation of a stable substrate layer

If the floor is uneven, first lay a flat, stable subfloor. The best option is concrete or cement, but if you only have plywood, use at least two layers of wood.

4. Use the guides and start in the middle.

There are two fundamental elements of wisdom when it comes to laying tile: Always use guidelines and start the installation from the center. In this way, it is easy to fill a whole room according to its orientation. Start at the back of the room and work your way to the main exit.

If cement mortar is applied, wipe off the excess immediately. Use a float for application and cleaning. Wait five minutes after installation to wipe the newly coated surface with a damp sponge.

F. Design advice with certifiedtiles

There are several unique ways to use straightened tiles to create a good design. Here are a few examples:

1. Playing with fine textures

The certified tiles are large and jointless, giving the impression of a larger surface. If you’re worried about the room looking hollow, opt for tiles with subtle but visible textures. You can also use flexible templates to fill in visual gaps.

2. Use mosaic tiles for decoration

Mosaic tiles provide splashes or colors on a seamless surface. Smaller tiles in contrasting colors can be used to create patterns or borders between the larger tiles.

3. Use of contrasting colours for different surface levels

Jointless tiling can lead to confusion and even accidents if a person cannot distinguish between the two surface levels. Use different tile colors or even border stencils to make this distinction.

With these principles you can create your own design. Create a modern, simple and elegant look with subtly straightened tiles.

Certified tiles are only available for clay-based grades that allow for seamless grouting after installation. However, they are not necessarily the best option for the floor or wall.

Installation of corrected tile may be considered if you have adequate space, a level floor, and an additional cost for the product (including professional installation). Use this tile to achieve a subtle and elegant look without having to buy natural stone tiles.
