Standard Laundry Space Requirements

The laundry room is an area of the home that is often overlooked. The living room, the dining room, the bedroom and even the kitchen are in second place. But the importance of the laundry room should not be underestimated. After all, this is the part of the house where laundry is washed, sorted and folded. In most homes, this is also the part of the house where laundry and appliances are kept.

It is therefore advisable to build a functional and practical laundry room. It should have plenty of natural light, counter space and secure storage. Whether you are building a new home or renovating, there are certain dimensions, specifications, and requirements that you need to consider when designing your laundry room.

Standard space for dryers and washing machines

The two appliances that are considered equipment in laundries are washers and dryers.

The dimensions of tumble driers and washing machines vary according to the manufacturer. In the United States, the average size of a puck is 27 inches wide and about 25-28 inches deep. The average dryer has a depth of 36 inches. The height of these machines is about 36 inches for the top loader models and about 34-39 inches for the front loader models.

In Europe, on the other hand, washing machines and dryers are measured according to the metric system. If you are buying from abroad, make sure you translate the measurements. Compared to their American counterparts, washers and dryers manufactured in Europe are smaller in all three dimensions. The average size of a puck in Europe is 60 cm wide, 85 cm high and 60 cm deep.

If you place washers and dryers next to each other, you will need a horizontal distance of about 1.50 m or 60 inches. You need more space for pipes and ventilation. Additionally, an inch or two on each side and between units will help reduce vibration noise. If you choose a top-loading appliance, there must be at least 15 cm space above the appliance for the door to open.

When a washer and dryer are stacked, a vertical distance of 72 inches should be maintained, while the horizontal distance should be at least 30 inches. You should also consider the depth of the appliance and leave 15 cm of space for pipes and for ventilation and air circulation.

Also, make sure the entrance to the laundry room is wide enough for washers and dryers. They must be at least 45 inches wide to make a 90 degree turn. The door to the laundry room must also be at least 32 inches wide. The wider the door, the better, because then you have more freedom of movement. Consider using a roll-up door, as it does not take up floor or wall space when open.

Standard Operating Area Specifications

You should have at least 18 inches of space on one side of your washer. This gives you plenty of leeway to work on pre-purging, such as. B. Add stain removers.

Note that most base cabinets are designed for a counter height of 36 inches. It may be comfortable or sufficient for cooking, but it may be too high to fold laundry, especially if you are handling large pieces. So you will need a tray or desk that is 30 to 33 inches high.

There should also be about 48 inches of space if front loaders are present. This gives you enough room to get around the open doors. The bearing blocks can be used to store and lift the front loader. However, the downside is that there is no workspace on the devices. Instead of using cabinets for storage, install appliances under the countertop to make room for folding laundry.

You might even consider creating an area where you can hang your clean laundry right after it dries. You can choose to install sturdy clothes rods that hang from wire shelves. You can also fit clothes rods between the wall units. Make sure the rods are far enough from the wall and leave enough room for the hangers. Another way to save space is a two-tier clothes rack on wheels or a wall-mounted clothes rack that folds down to hang hang hangers when the dryer is empty. When not in use, it can be folded against the wall.

Other building regulations

In most homes, the laundry room is in the basement, and for good reason. It is damp and removed from the main rooms of the house, including the bedroom and living room, so it will not cause unwanted noise.

If noise is a problem, additional wall and floor insulation can be installed. This should reduce noise pollution in other parts of the house. You should also have a floor drain to protect the rest of the house in case the washing machine hose breaks or overflows.

Wet and dry areas can be used to make the washroom more efficient. This can be done by placing a sink and washing machine next to profiled water and sewer lines. That way you can keep the wet spots together. The clothes rail should be placed near the dryer.

Of course, a professional electrician and plumber can provide you with gas, electrical and plumbing specifications to ensure that your laundry room meets the regulations in your area.

Remember to always use the correct electrical connections and avoid using an extension cord. Plan the location of the dryer so that the vent pipe is as short and straight as possible. This enables fast and safe drying and reduces the fire risk due to shorter ventilation times.
