How to Remove Yellow Stains From White Sheets

Nobody likes to sleep on yellow colored sheets. If you’ve just removed your white cotton sheets from the wash and discovered that they still have those ugly sweat stains, you want to know how to remove those unwanted yellow stains from your sheets immediately.

In this article we reveal the most common causes of yellow sweat stains on sheets and present the most effective methods to remove these stains and keep them on your sheets forever.

What causes yellow spots on leaves

White leaves can turn yellow with prolonged use. Due to the build-up of body sweat, the use of lotions and other skin care products, it does not take long for the fibres in the fabrics to turn yellow. The bad news is that the usual detergent cannot remove these stains from your sheets. What you need are a few simple household items before or after washing your sheets in warm water. However, it is always advisable to check the care label before using any of our methods.

How to remove yellow spots on leaves

Method 1: Borax

Borax

  1. Fill your sink or bathtub with hot water. You can also use a bucket or other large container for your leaves. Just make sure that the container is big enough to cover the leaves completely.
  2. Now add a tablespoon of borax to the warm water. Borax is a white powder mineral used to bleach laundry. Read the instructions on the package for accurate measurements and always wear gloves when mixing this product with water. To further enhance the effect of borax, use 1 cup of white vinegar for each leaf to be washed. This solution eliminates all odours from the sheets.
  3. Make sure that the trays are completely submerged in hot water. Press the leaves under water with your hands. If your bucket is not big enough to hold several sheets, you should put the rest in the sink or bathtub.
  4. Let the leaves soak for at least 1 hour or preferably overnight. If the yellow spots are important, it is better to leave the sheets overnight.
  5. The next day, wring out the sheets on the sink or bathtub to remove as much water as possible.
  6. Now wash the sheets in the washing machine with your usual detergent. Read the washing instructions for your bed linen before choosing the right washing programme.
  7. After washing, dry the sheets on a rope or in the dryer. Drying sheets on a clothesline takes longer, but it is the most efficient way to dry them without leaving stains in the fibres of the fabric. Eventually the sun will illuminate the white sheets in a natural way. A dryer, on the other hand, is not necessarily a good idea because stains are more difficult to remove in the future.

Method 2: Good old lemons

Good old lemons

Lemons are natural whiteners thanks to their very acidic juice. All you need is water, a big pot and a few slices of lemon.

  1. Cut 3 or 4 lemons, (you can use as many lemons as you like!).
  2. Fill a large saucepan with water and put in all the lemon slices.
  3. Bring the mixture to the boil.
  4. Now switch off the stove and carefully place the drawer in hot water using metal clamps.
  5. Leave the receptacle in the drip for at least 20 minutes.
  6. Finally, empty the pot and wash the laundry in the washing machine with your usual detergent.

Method 3: Liquid bluing

Liquid blue stain

The liquid blue stain removes the yellow hue and makes your spotted leaves white again. Many manufacturers now use liquid blue stain for finishing fabrics, but it is important to know that blue stain is only a temporary solution because the effects fade after each wash. This product can be purchased in most grocery stores or hardware stores and is super easy to use. Just pour the liquid directly onto the leaves. Note that the blue dye can discolor the fabric. Therefore, follow the dilution instructions on the bottle, as these may vary from brand to brand.

For most liquid blue stain products, mix a teaspoon with a quarter of the water. This solution is then poured onto the plate with a normal detergent. If using a rinsing cycle, use less than one teaspoon of blue liquid in the same amount of water.

Attention: Avoid pouring this product into the vending machine of your washing machine. It can contaminate the drum. The product should also not be used with fabric softeners, bleach and other cleaning agents as it may react and cause stains. However, a liquid blue stain is safe with detergent.

How to prevent yellow sweat stains on leaves

How do you prevent yellow sweat stains on bed sheets?

The fibres in your skin absorb everything that comes in contact with it, from body fluids to lotions and deodorants. These can lead to ugly yellow spots on white leaves. Although this is not an indication of your personal hygiene, there are ways to prevent or minimize the production of these fluids in your body. Here are some tips to avoid yellow stains on your sheets:

Wash your sheets regularly

Showering before bed does not prevent your body from leaving dead skin cells or sweating in your bed. Accumulated moisture and oil can attract dust mite, mould or mildew to your mattress, which can cause sore throats, runny noses, breathing problems and even allergic symptoms.

To avoid all these problems, it is best to wash your bedding regularly. Basic rule: Wash them once a week, and twice if they’re white. By washing your white sheets every three days or so, you can keep them brighter white for longer.

If your washing machine offers the possibility of an extra rinse, you can use it to remove detergent residue from the sheets. This debris gets on your sheets and discolours them. You should also be careful when buying the laundry and make sure that you do not use too much. Always follow the instructions on the detergent packaging to determine the amount needed to wash your bed linen.

Fabric softener not for use in store

Fabric softeners can make your bed linen softer and smell good, but they do not wash well in the machine. The result is that your leaves end up with an accumulation of chemicals. Instead of fabric softener, choose vinegar as a natural solution. Add half a cup of distilled white vinegar directly into the tub of your washing machine. It is an excellent way to naturally lighten (and soften) your sheets.

Wash your white sheets separately

White sheets should never be washed with coloured fabrics, as the dyes may peel off on the white sheets. Always keep your white bedding separate from other colours when washing.

Wash your face before bedtime

Our skin picks up a lot of germs all day long. Always wash your face before bed to prevent dirt, makeup, dust or grime from getting on your sheets. This prevents your sheets from yellowing or discolouring.

Do not eat in bed

Avoid eating pizzas, chips or other late treats in bed because of the risk of stains or accidental spillage of your sheets. Removing these stains from white sheets can be a difficult task, so it is best not to eat in bed.

FAQs

Does baking soda remove yellow perspiration stains from plates?

Baking soda is a natural odour neutralizer with powerful bleaching capabilities. To remove sweat stains from your bedding, add half a cup of baking soda to your regular detergent and select the correct wash temperature on your washing machine. The result is shiny white leaves that are odourless.

Can the bleach turn white?

Bleach is known to clean up just about everything. However, if your sheets are coloured, the use of bleach is not a good idea. This product contains chlorine, a chemical that reacts with the sweat of our body and causes yellow stains on the sheets. To use the bleach properly, first wash your white sheets with an ordinary detergent before adding half a cup of bleach to the wash programme.

Do I have to wash my sheets in cold or warm water?

White sheets should be washed in warm water. Otherwise the yellow spots won’t come out. High temperatures of 50-60 degrees Celsius will also kill allergens, but it is best to check the instructions on the care label on the blade before washing it in the machine.

Completion

White cotton sheets can lose their original appearance after a few months of use. All the methods we propose will extend the life of your bedding by removing stains or yellow spots. For best results, don’t forget to wash your sheets regularly to make them look like new. If washed and lit properly, your bedding can last up to 5 years or more, depending on the quality of the fabric.
