How to Choose the Right Planting Style for Your Garden

Nophyn Tesil 4 min read

Picking a planting style shapes everything else in the garden. It sets the mood, decides how much work you’ll be doing at weekends, and dictates how the space shifts through the seasons. Get it right and a scattering of separate beds and pots starts to feel like one connected space.

Think about the atmosphere you’re after and how you’ll use the garden before buying plants. A formal layout might call for clipped shapes and a tight palette, whereas a family garden needs tougher planting and room to run about. If you’re drawn to herbs, silvery foliage and warm natural materials, a Mediterranean garden is worth a look, especially with a sunny, free-draining spot.

Start With What Your Garden Actually Gives You

However strong your personal taste, the garden itself should really have the final say. Plants do far better when they suit the light, soil and shelter already there, rather than being forced into conditions that don’t work.

Watch where the sun lands through the day. A south-facing border might get hours of direct light, while a bed under a tree stays shaded. Wind matters too, particularly in exposed gardens or on roof terraces.

Soil is worth checking before you plant anything. Heavy clay holds moisture, while sandy or chalky soil drains quickly. It’s often easier to pick plants suited to what you’ve already got than to fight the ground for years.

Work Out How Much Maintenance You’re Up For

Every style takes some looking after, but the amount varies. Formal gardens need regular trimming to keep their crisp lines. Cottage gardens look effortlessly informal, but still need dividing, staking and deadheading.

If a lower-maintenance garden appeals, structural shrubs, grasses and reliable perennials are a good start, fewer varieties, repeated throughout, give a more settled look. Watering is worth being honest about too: pots and new borders need regular attention when it’s dry, and locally suited plants save a lot of hassle once established.

A Look at Different Planting Styles

Contemporary planting relies on a small number of plants repeated in blocks or drifts. Grasses, clipped evergreens and architectural plants give clean shapes and rhythm, with colours kept restrained. Simplicity is the point; too many competing shapes and that calm, ordered feel unravels.

Cottage garden planting is all about abundance: informal borders packed with roses, foxgloves, delphiniums, hardy geraniums and herbs. It should feel relaxed, but a little structure, a few evergreen shrubs or repeated plants, stops things tipping into chaos.

Mediterranean-inspired planting brings together aromatic plants, drought-tolerant flowers and foliage in green, grey and silver, alongside gravel, terracotta and timber. It works best in sunny, sheltered spots with decent drainage; in colder, wetter areas, hardier plants with a similar look are the safer bet.

Woodland planting suits shaded corners. Ferns, hostas, hellebores and heucheras build layers of foliage beneath trees, leaning on leaf shape and texture rather than bright flowers.

Wildlife-friendly planting offers food and shelter to birds, bees and insects through native shrubs, nectar-rich flowers and berrying plants. It needn’t look scruffy, clear borders give structure while leaving room for seed heads, and staggered flowering keeps pollinators fed longer.

Think About the House Itself

The relationship between your home and garden should feed into the style too. A formal Georgian house might suit crisp hedging and symmetrical beds, while a modern extension could sit well with grasses and a restrained palette.

That said, the garden doesn’t have to match the building exactly. A deliberate contrast can work beautifully, a soft, abundant garden balancing striking contemporary architecture, or simple planting bringing calm to a period property. The materials and colours already there give clues about which shades will feel at home.

Use Colour Thoughtfully

Colour does a lot of the emotional work in a garden. Cool shades like blue, white and soft purple feel calm, while orange, red and yellow bring warmth and energy. You don’t need one rigid palette, but a clear sense of colour makes the design feel considered. Foliage matters just as much as flowers, green, silver, bronze and burgundy leaves keep things interesting once the flowers are over.

Don’t Forget Height and Structure

Good planting mixes heights: trees and tall shrubs form the upper layer, medium plants fill the middle, and lower-growing plants soften the front edge. Evergreens, hedging and grasses keep some structure through winter, when flowering plants have died back, without them, a garden lush in summer can feel bare for months. It’s also worth checking the eventual size of each plant; packing everything in tightly looks great at first but often leads to poor growth later.

Let It Develop Over Time

A planting style doesn’t need finishing in a single season. Gardens change, and it pays to see how plants settle in before filling every gap. Start with the main structural plants, then build up with perennials, bulbs and seasonal colour as you go. Repeating what works helps the garden feel established, and saves you buying plants that were never going to suit the spot anyway.

In the end, the right planting style should reflect both your home’s character and the realities of your garden. Think about sunlight, soil, upkeep and what you like, and you’ll end up with a space that feels coherent, manageable and enjoyable all year round.
