Bulqit Launches in Austin, Bringing a New Way to Buy Recurring Home Services

Nophyn Tesil 4 min read

Austin homeowners can order dinner, groceries or a ride across town in a matter of minutes. Finding someone to mow the lawn, clean the pool or handle another recurring home service can still mean searching online, calling multiple companies, requesting quotes and trying to determine whether the price is reasonable.

A new platform launching in Austin this week wants to change that.

Bulqit, a marketplace for recurring home services, is bringing its neighborhood-based approach to Austin, connecting homeowners with local service companies at pre-negotiated bulk rates.

The concept is straightforward: instead of every homeowner shopping independently for the same services, Bulqit groups homes into geographic areas called Bulqit Blocks. Local vendors can then compete for the opportunity to serve multiple nearby customers, creating route density for the service company and better economics for the homeowner.

For consumers, the goal is to make buying home services feel considerably less like hiring a contractor.

Home Services, Without the Shopping

Bulqit focuses on the recurring services homeowners need throughout the year, including lawn care, pool service, pest control, window cleaning and other exterior home services.

Homeowners enter their address, see the services and pricing available for their home, and can sign up directly through the platform.

There are no calls required, no collecting three estimates and no negotiating individually with a service provider.

Bulqit’s premise is that the traditional home-services market is inefficient for both sides of the transaction. A lawn company may drive across Austin servicing customers scattered miles apart, while dozens of homeowners in the same neighborhood separately search for someone to perform essentially the same work.

Concentrating customers geographically can change those economics.

A vendor that can service several homes on the same street or within the same community spends less time driving and more time performing paid work. Bulqit uses that efficiency to help establish competitive pricing for participating homeowners.

Why Austin?

Austin’s rapid residential growth makes it particularly well suited to the model.

The metro area contains a mix of established neighborhoods, master-planned communities and significant new-home development, creating clusters of homeowners who often purchase many of the same recurring services.

Bulqit has been developing relationships with homebuilders, HOAs and residential communities as another way to introduce the platform to groups of homeowners at once.

But homeowners don’t need to live in a participating HOA or development to use it. Austin residents can enter their address on Bulqit to see what is available in their area.

As more households within an area participate, the opportunity becomes more attractive to service companies because they can build denser, more efficient routes.

A Marketplace for Austin Service Companies, Too

The Austin launch isn’t only about homeowners.

Bulqit is actively adding local lawn, pool, pest, cleaning and other home-service companies to its marketplace.

Rather than charging vendors simply for leads, Bulqit is designed around completed services. Vendors get an opportunity to win recurring customers concentrated within specific geographic areas, while Bulqit handles the marketplace and payment infrastructure.

That distinction is important in an industry where contractors can spend significant amounts of money buying leads that may never turn into customers.

For established Austin service companies, a dense group of recurring customers can be particularly valuable. Ten customers scattered across the metro aren’t necessarily the same business opportunity as ten customers concentrated within a few blocks of one another.

Bulqit is built around the latter.

Bringing the “Bulk Buy” to the Neighborhood

The idea behind Bulqit borrows from a familiar purchasing concept: buying together can create efficiencies that aren’t available when everyone buys individually.

The difference is that instead of buying a pallet of products, neighbors are effectively aggregating demand for services they already need.

Homeowners still have their own individual service relationships and properties. They simply benefit from the purchasing power and operational efficiency created when multiple nearby households use the same service provider.

It’s a decidedly Austin-friendly proposition: support local service businesses while making an annoying part of homeownership a little easier.

As Bulqit rolls out across the Austin area, its success will ultimately depend on reaching enough homeowners and vendors within individual neighborhoods to create that density.

If it works, finding someone to take care of the lawn or pool may eventually feel a lot more like the other services Austin consumers already buy from their phones.

Bulqit is now launching in the Austin market. Homeowners can check availability in their neighborhood, and Austin-area home-service companies can register to join the marketplace at Bulqit.com.
