Most of us have probably only tried a few of the different kinds of plums and may not even be aware that there are different kinds. The varieties are not infinite, and in fact there are less than a dozen.
Quiz: Plums are supposed to be the first fruits grown by humans. It probably started in Eastern Europe and in the mountains near the Caspian Sea.
Some people think they were around 200 b at the time. Chr. were transported to Rome and then introduced to Northern Europe. And are believed to have been made around 479 B.C. by the Chinese domesticated.
Although it is impossible to say how true this is, it is a fact that wild plums were cultivated in both the Old and New World. The most popular variety of plum today is the Japanese plum, which comes in black, red and yellow.
Black plums have a sweet and mild taste and are often used in cakes to add texture to ready meals. The red wines have a sweet and sour taste, while the yolks are smaller and coarser and are also called lemon plums. They have a crunchy, firm texture and are perfect for pies and jams.

1) Plum Plum
It is a variety of European plums with a dark skin and a sour taste in the skin and meat. Although plums have a high sugar content, their taste is bitter and sour.
Their skin is purple-blue and their flesh is often yellow-green and has an acidic taste, making them an excellent addition to sweet and savoury dishes.
Plums are usually harvested from the end of August to October and are represented by many subspecies of cultivars such as Prunus domestica insitia.
2) Elephant Heart Sequence
It is not surprising that this kind of plum is a large stone fruit, which is heart-shaped. Their skin ranges from dark red to purple and has a firm texture.
The flesh is so sweet and juicy that some people say it’s like drinking juice. It is classified as a Japanese plum and is delicious when still fresh.
Also with this variety, the nice balance between sweetness and acidity is the determining characteristic of the flesh, while the skin has a berry-like flavour. The drain of the elephant’s heart is usually chosen between September and October.
3) Nut plum
This variety is considered one of the best in Europe and one of the best of all plum varieties. It is longer and therefore less round than other plums.
Fortunately, they are often fresh and tasty. However, if left to dry, they can be added to many dry dishes. They are always impeccably sweet, which is why they are also called sugar plums.
This variety is best planted with other European plums such as the brook plum. The best thing about soybean plums is that they are not susceptible to parasites, although care must be taken not to be attacked by bacteria. This variety is also marketed as Italian plums or dams.
4) Plum green
These types of plums appear in shades ranging from light green to light green with red spots on the surface. But it’s their natural colour, even when the fruit is ripe.
If you expect them to be a little sour like other green fruits, you will be pleasantly surprised by their sweetness. In fact, green plums have the highest sugar content of all plums.
Green plums are small to medium-sized, depending on the variety, and have a dense and juicy flesh with a great balance between sweetness and acidity of the citrus fruit.
These plums are sold in the summer under the names Imperial Gage, Rhine Claude, Bryanston, Golden Transparent, Laxton Gage and Cambridge Gage.
Each of these varieties has a different colour and flavour of skin and flesh. This variety of plums is versatile and is used to make cakes, ice cream, pies and jams. Green plums can also be combined with savory dishes such as ricotta, basil, chili and seafood.
5) French plum
This is a fresh plum variety in European style that is excellent for plum drying. It is a stone fruit that has an elongated outline, looks like a small pear and is the size of a large walnut.
The skin is dark and smooth, with shades of purple and light blue, and the flesh has a dark amber colour. The tree is ready to be harvested in late summer, and its variety, called the improved French plum, is very popular in the United States. It’s deliciously sweet when it’s soft and just as sour when it’s firm.
6) Monk’s plum
This is a different kind of Japanese plum that has a lighter, amber skin. It is usually dark purple to light black and round in shape.
Their meat usually has an orange tint. They are sweet and juicy with a small core. They are available at the end of the season and mature about three weeks after the Black Ruby.
Their firm flesh makes Friar a popular variety of plums for fresh consumption. These trees have a long harvesting period, because this bumper harvest is not ready until the end of August.
7) Mirabelle plum
You know them best as cherry plums, which are very small but surprisingly sweet. They are mainly grown in certain regions of France and are known for their use in jams, jellies, fruit brandies and certain bakery products.
Mirabelle plums are one of the rarest plum species and are not found in many parts of the world. Imports from France to other countries are also difficult due to quality control.
Ironically, you can grow them in your own garden if you find a real and reliable supplier who can supply you with quality plants.
You must ensure that they grow in a large room with regular care and maintenance so that they grow in good health. But before you embark on this journey, you need to know when is the best time to plant fruit trees.
8) Prune Mirobalan
They are sometimes called cherry plums because they look like small round, red or yellow cherries. They come in different varieties and their taste varies from sweet to pie.
They are delicious when fresh, but they are also used to cook and make jelly. These trees are usually grown in backyards as ornamental fruit trees.
Although the fruit itself is small and round, the plant will grow to the size of a shrub in a small garden. This variety is also known as one of the first trees to produce flowers in spring.
9) Black Beauty Plum
This is another variety of the Japanese plum that has bright yellow flesh and a dark purple-red skin. It is an extremely juicy stone fruit, with firm flesh and medium to large size.
It’s also a plum that needs to be eaten while it’s still fresh. The best way to find out which fruit is fresh is to squeeze it gently and see if it is not too soft.
If the plum is hard and immature, keep it at room temperature and wait for the magic. Black Beauty is also a plum variety with a great balance between sweetness and acidity.
It is an early hybrid of plums and apricots with more qualities than the first. They have a yellow-green skin and strong pinkish red flesh.
They are oval shaped, firm and crispy. This makes them an excellent choice for the preparation of mint salsa. But you can also use them to make jam, chutneys and plum crumbs.
These plums are ready to be harvested at the end of July and August and can be exported without fear of damage.
Although the fruits are often in bunches, they have a smooth, reddish skin and yellow flesh. There are several corks on the market under the name Dapple Dandy, Aromatic Pomegranate, Flavorglo or Dinosaur Egg.
This hybrid is also best consumed fresh as it is tasty, firm and shiny. If you find them soaked, this means that they are not ripe yet and should be kept at room temperature for three days or about a week in the fridge.
