What is the Best Time of Day to Water Grass and Lawn in Summer/Winter

Do you want to know how to get the best lawn with as little water as possible? Read on to find out how!

Every garden lover wants to have the most beautiful and pristine garden in the neighborhood to be jealous of, but what is a garden without grass?

A well-kept lawn consists of a well-maintained lawn that is regularly mowed and accurately watered.

If you see the uniformity of the clippings and the colour saturation of the lawn, how can you tell if your lawn is sufficiently watered?

Grass can grow easily, but it takes time and effort to find a way to make it grow.

Lawn treatments for winter are necessary for keeping the grass healthy and green. With the help of these treatments, you can also extend the life of your lawn.

You have to decide what kind of grass you want to grow, when to plant it, how to fertilize it and of course when and how much to water it!

How to water the grass

Whether you use a hose or a sprinkler, you need to know that watering your lawn is not just about watering and then moving on.

Grass needs a lot of water to grow healthy and happy. What’s a lot of water? 1 to 1.5 inches, to be exact.

It is impossible to measure this quantity because each district and each household has a different water pressure and different equipment to water its house.

Garden grass

This does not mean that you need to water your lawn up to one inch per session, but it does mean that you need to maintain one inch per week.

There are several ways to measure this. If you want to be technical, you can buy a rain sensor and see that you get one centimeter of water per week.

If you don’t want to do this, take a small empty container and place it next to the sprinkler.

Let’s see how long it takes to get an inch of water. Suppose it takes an hour; divide that time by the number of times you water your lawn each week (30 minutes twice a week, 20 minutes three times a week), and water your lawn during that time.

A quick test to determine whether you are spraying the grass correctly is to push a thin metal object 15 cm into the grass.

If you can’t get through easily, you might need more water. If the water runs into the street, there might be too much water!

Best time for aquatic grass

It is best to water the grass in the morning; the sooner the better. It is cooler and less windy at this time of day; lower temperatures and strong winds slow down evaporation. You will use less water and your lawn will not get thirsty because it stays wet longer.

Another reason why you should water in the morning instead of in the late afternoon (even though it is a cooler time of day) is that you want your grass to dry at night. If you let the grass stay wet overnight, you run the risk of fungi and bacteria growing in your garden.

How often should you water the lawn

Ideally, the lawn should be sprayed 2 to 3 times a week. This way your lawn stays watery and does not dry out. But why don’t you water it every day? The reason why it is not recommended to water your lawn on a daily basis is that this can lead to a shallow root system.

Lawn

Shallow roots tend to dry out more quickly because they are weak and cannot reach the waterlogged soil. Intensive watering 2 to 3 times a week stimulates the growth of deep roots so that they can absorb water from the soil.

This makes your lawn more resistant to dryness and drought in dry, warm weather.

Don’t think you should just watch your lawn watering during the summer months. Winter watering is important because when your soil is dry, your grass is more sensitive to the weather.

Avoid this by watering the grass all year round. The only difference is that in extremely hot weather you may need a little more water by evaporation. Check the amount of water your lawn gets from the rain gauge.

Benefits of water saving

Spraying your lawn during watering has several advantages. First of all: This will save you money! If you take the time to water so early in the morning, use less water to give the grass as much moisture as in the hottest hours of the day; the grass is already saturated with dew, and the hot sun does not evaporate the water from the grass.

Watering the grass during cooler periods of the day helps to retain the water as it evaporates more slowly. Reduce again the amount of water needed and the frequency of watering the lawn.

And finally..: The less water you use, the less nutrients you get from the soil. Leaching can be a problem in flooded gardens; again it will cost you money to re-fertilise the soil and add nutrients.

It is extremely important to choose the right time to water your lawn so that it is in the best possible shape!
