Things You Must Know Before Buying LED Grow Lights

Gary Cripps May 23, 2021 8 min read

LED lights are an ideal choice for indoor plants and gardens. They are far more energy-efficient than traditional lighting, and they produce more light with less heat. Yet, there is a lot that you should think about before you buy your first LED light.  For example, the intensity of light does not always correlate with the rated power of a fixture.  In addition, the quality of LED lights can vary greatly, and some types of lighting fixtures may not be ideal for your particular needs.

Before you can grow the finest tomatoes, you need to get some light. And while the sun is the perfect source of light for growing vegetables, it’s not always an option. For a long time, the answer was tungsten and compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs work just as well, but they can cost a lot of money. Luckily, today LED grow lights are available, and they’re affordable. But before you rush off to buy one, here are some things you need to know.

Admittedly, LEDs are one of the most confusing components in the grow room. They are a new technology, they are expensive, and there are so many different models and brands on the market. Here are a few things you should know before you even start looking at LEDs for your garden. Those are the main ideas to keep in mind while writing a blog post intro. If you’d like to see more of these style posts, feel free to leave a comment in the section below. If you want to see an example of this blog intro style in action, I wrote a post with this style in late March, and you can read that here. Date of publication : 22. May 2021 Shana Yuri Grow lights are used by many businesses and individuals to grow a variety of plants indoors. Commercial growers benefit greatly from the use of grow lights because they extend the growing season, which is usually determined by weather and available sunlight. Grow lights are not a new concept and have been used in various forms for decades. The original lamp was often used with reflectors to achieve impressive growth results. However, lighting technology has changed dramatically over the last few decades and for many purposes the LED is the best light source. What is an LED and why is it the best lighting for cultivation? We will address these issues in the next article, where we will explain the advantages of LEDs over other light sources. First, let’s define what the term LED means and what LEDs are.

1. What is an LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Perhaps you remember a time long ago, from the 1970s, when you were attached to a digital watch with green or red numbers on a black dial? Those were the original LEDs, and they’ve come a long way since then. An LED works differently than a regular light bulb, with a different shape. It is activated by the electric current running through it. This causes the diode to light up. Before we go any further, let’s take a step back and look at the original type of lamp. What happens if you touch it when it’s on? It’s going to be very hot! With conventional incandescent lamps, a large part of the energy is lost in the form of heat. This problem could not be circumvented, regardless of the type of lamp used, until the advent of LEDs. An LED bulb is 90% more energy efficient than a standard bulb and produces negligible heat. They are therefore increasingly used in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, as well as in vehicles. Low energy consumption also means longer life. You will find that LED bulbs can be more expensive than other types of bulbs, but the energy savings and longevity more than make up for it. And that’s not all! Why do we recommend them as an ideal source for growing flower bulbs? Before you read on, take a look at protechgrowlights, the leading supplier of high quality LED lighting to many satisfied customers. Let’s take a look at some additional benefits of LED lighting. word-image-8312

2. What are the benefits of LED lighting?

If you want a detailed description of LED lights, we recommend reading the information at this link, but we will go further here and explain why LED lights are better than traditional lights for use as grow lights. First: The LEDs are directional. A standard incandescent lamp emits light – and heat – in all directions. This is an even bigger waste of precious energy. The fact that the LED is directional makes it ideal as a grow light, because it can be directed at the plant and puts all the light where it needs to be at the right time, without wasting energy. In addition, the LEDs can be adjusted over the entire light spectrum. This requires some explanation, so we’ll do our best! The light spectrum ranges from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR), with the known light in between. An LED can emit light at any point in the spectrum, and grow lights from the manufacturers mentioned above can be adjusted to any point in the spectrum. Why is this important? Bright light on the plant may or may not promote growth. That’s because it has to absorb this energy from the light source – in nature, the sun – to get the energy it needs. Sunlight is in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. Since different types of plants require different levels of light, it is easy to see why it is important to tune your grow lights to a specific point in the light spectrum. Plants respond and grow better when they are exposed to the right kind of light at the right time, which can be precisely controlled with LED lighting. You can see that this is called PAR or photosynthetically active radiation. This is what plants absorb from the sun, and when reproduced at the right level with LED grow lights, they get the same level of PAR as in the natural environment. In general : The higher the PAR value of the LED, the more efficient and energy-saving the growth. It also means that your plants are not exposed to higher than normal temperatures in the early stages of their growth, which can be a problem when using standard lighting.

3. How to choose LED grow lights

Now that you know that LED lights are amazingly energy efficient and can provide the right PAR level at a lower cost than standard lights, you can understand why commercial manufacturers and even individuals are turning to LEDs as a solution to their problems. The initial cost of these lamps is higher, but the savings from no energy consumption and direct illumination can be significant. For those who are growing professionally, these savings mean not only lower costs, but also more profit. LEDs are commonly used for growing flowers, vegetables, fruits and all types of plants and can provide greater success in raising young plants until they are ready to be planted or sold. We encourage you to read the links we have included here, as they all provide excellent information about LED lights that we could not include. We hope we have given you a starting point for improving your grow room.

Frequently Asked Questions

What LED lights are best for growing?

LED grow lights are often marketed as giving off just as much light as traditional grow lights, but using less energy and emitting less heat. While this is often true, it’s important to factor in other considerations when deciding whether or not a LED grow light is right for you. Not all LEDs are created equal: some may be powerful enough to support the growth of your plants, but not have enough blue light to actually encourage flowering, or vice versa. (Some grow light manufacturers also try to mislead customers into thinking their lights are better than they are.) You’ll also need to factor in the cost of running multiple lights at the same time if you have multiple plants. LED lights have become a popular choice for indoor plants and gardens, particularly among hobbyists who enjoy a little extra guidance when growing their own supply of vegetables and flowers. However, they’re also a great choice for professional growers looking to save money on electricity, and many companies have switched over to LED lights for these reasons. To help you find the best LED lights for growing, we’ve put together a list of some of the most popular options available as well as some things you should know before purchasing.

What wattage LED grow light do I need?

While LEDs have been available for commercial horticulture for years, they have only recently become economically feasible for home growers—and only for small-scale use. LEDs can save you money, because they use less electricity and they don’t generate heat . However, they are much more expensive than other grow lights. In addition, some LEDs are much better than others. So, what wattage LED grow light do you need? When it comes to growing marijuana indoors, you need the right lighting to ensure healthy and productive plants. Why? Because without it, you won’t be able to grow the biggest and best buds possible. The good news is that if you’re reading this, you don’t have to be an expert to grow huge, potent buds. You just need the right combination of light, nutrients and environment.

What should I look for in a grow light?

While it might seem like a simple question, picking out a light that will suit your needs can be far from simple, especially if you’re new to hydroponics. There are multiple factors that need to be taken into consideration: price, wattage, coverage, and more. Dealing with a light that doesn’t match your needs can lead to stunted growth and sometimes even death, depending on the plant and how long you have to wait before it gets the light it needs. When growing plants at home, the right grow light is essential for success. The key to using one is knowing how much light your plants need, how much light you can provide, and how to get the most out of your grow light. We’ll cover everything you need to know about choosing light for your plants, how to compare grow lights, and how to use them effectively.
