Soapstone Floor Tiles (Design Guide)

Since the introduction of soapstone floor tiles, this innovative material has proven to be flexible, durable, and affordable. The tiles are made of a combination of interlocking grey stones, and are the result of decades of research on naturally occurring soapstone and how to create a durable and resilient tile.

Soapstone is a hard mineral that includes chalk, clay, and limestone, and it is also sometimes referred to as “whale rock” and “moon rock.” Soapstone has a high degree of hardness, but it is not as hard as marble, and it does not have the same qualities as other materials such as granite or quartz. This natural stone is porous, and its interiors are filled with hollow spaces, leading to its distinctive look. It is often used in both indoor and outdoor applications. Soapstone is a popular choice for floors, for its durability, beauty, and energy efficiency.

Here’s our guide to designing soapstone tiles: what is it, where can you use it, how much does it cost and how do you clean it.

Soapstone tiles are interesting because their colours vary depending on the batch of tiles purchased or bought. The shades can range from light to dark grey and even with light white marbling.

This is one of the most popular interior design options, as it gives floors a distinctive look without being expensive.

What is a soapstone tile

Soapstone floor tiles are made from natural soapstone and are more durable than many other types of stone flooring materials. Soapstone has natural antibacterial and non-porous properties, making it ideal for flooring.

Soapstone slabs are also considered ideal for homes in colder climates. First, it will not be as golden as the ceramic or stone tiles currently on the market.

As a rule, soapstone tiles are combined with some original underfloor heating system. This allows the room in the house to be heated very efficiently. But beyond that, there are many other things you need to know about soapstone slabs.

Soapstone tiles are also an excellent choice for wet areas of the home. This could be a bathroom, a pool, an outdoor area or any other space that tends to be wet and slippery.

Soapstone does not become slippery or absorb water when wet. It also feels very soft, so it won’t hurt your feet when you walk barefoot.

Where to use soapstone floors

If there’s one thing that sets soapstone floors apart from other tiles and flooring materials, it’s their versatility and durability.

In fact, this type of tile or floor can be used both indoors and outdoors. This means that there are no limits to the use in and around the house.

Soapstone floors are a popular flooring option for outdoor patios. Weather conditions such as snow, rain or even extreme heat cannot affect or damage the surface.

Soapstone floor tiles do not discolour when exposed to excessive sunlight or summer heat. There will also be no staining from dead leaves during the fall.

Indoors, it can be used anywhere, but it is best suited for areas that are usually damp, simply because it can tolerate a lot of moisture.

One of the main examples of the use of soapstone indoors is in the back of the kitchen. It is easy to clean and maintain. It is also a great addition to the bathroom, as a wall or floor covering.

In fact, soapstone is a great way to decorate any space, whether it’s inside or outside your home. This type of tile is subtle, but for the right reasons, it can also beautify the rooms it decorates. This gives the room a natural look.

Since the colors are quite versatile, they don’t clash with many colors, which makes the design possibilities quite open and interesting.

Can I use soapstone in the shower?

The immediate answer to this question, without hesitation, is an unequivocal yes. Renovating or remodeling a bathroom can be stressful for any homeowner. In fact, the goal is always to make the most of your budget and still manage to create a unique space.

While soapstone kitchen countertops or backsplashes are the traditional form of use, soapstone has long made the transition to the bathroom.

However, using soapstone in the shower poses some problems. There are many pros and cons to consider, given the variables involved.

But despite these difficulties, the qualities far outweigh the flaws when it comes to deciding to use soapstone in the bathroom.

Firstly, soapstone is a much softer material than marble, granite, quartz and all the other traditionally used materials.

The natural composition of soapstone contains talc. This gives it a natural softness. This gives the impression that because it is soft, it may spoil with moisture and time, but this is not the case.

The density of soapstone makes it extremely durable, making it ideal for any type of bathroom.

Soapstone can also store heat without burning. This material is not porous. This allows it to keep the water warm when used to fill the sink, for example. It is also ideal for handling residual heat from styling tools such as curling irons, hair dryers and hair binders.

As a shower floor, you can keep warm in the sun. It makes getting out of the shower at the end of the morning very pleasant.

This material is also environmentally friendly and hygienic. To obtain them, you must dig them out of the ground and cut them into the desired size.

Since the material is not porous, it does not need to be sealed, thus eliminating the need to use harsh chemicals that can corrode the material over time. Moreover, because of its density, it does not create conditions conducive to the multiplication of bacteria.

How much does a soapstone slab cost?

Soapstone can be purchased in slabs, finished pieces or slices. Depending on that, the price range varies. Tiles generally cost between $30 and $40.

Finished products typically cost between $40 and $60, depending on size.

The signs are the most expensive; their price ranges between $70 and $120.

The prices of soapstone tiles can also vary depending on where the material is mined and whether it has a high or low talc content.

A lower talc content is generally more expensive because it means the material is denser and more durable.

How do I clean soapstone tiles?

Soapstone tiles are easy to clean and only a few maintenance instructions need to be followed. A good coat of mineral oil is the best option.

Wipe it with a clean, dry cloth. Make sure you do this every few months to maintain the shine.

When polishing, make sure that the movements are regular and circular. Let the oil soak for about half an hour. Soapstone is naturally light in colour, but by using mineral oil, the colour can become deeper and richer.
