Everything You Need to Know About the Sativa Marijuana Strain

Everything You Need to Know About the Sativa Marijuana Strain

The world of cannabis can be pretty confusing unless you’re really into the subject; from the terms to knowing which plant belongs where in the family Cannabaceae, it can seem like a lot to cover.

While the whole subject may seem overwhelming, it isn’t once you begin to understand the main classifications.

Before we jump into Cannabis Sativa, you should know that cannabis refers to the family of flowering plants where Sativa comes from.

It’s generally accepted that there are three species in the cannabis family: cannabis Indica, cannabis Sativa, and Cannabis Ruderalis. However, some experts believe these three belong to the same species and are subspecies.

What’s Cannabis Sativa?

Since this post is about Sativa marijuana strains, it’s worth learning about Cannabis Sativa.

Sativa is a species with origins in the far eastern region. The plant has been in use for as long as humans have existed. Throughout history, it’s been used in food preparation, medicine, and fibre production.

Physically, Sativa strains have tall, slender stalks with narrow leaves. The species is known for its high levels of a compound known as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

If anything, the THC content makes Sativa more popular than Indica, the other significant species. The chemical has mind-altering characteristics generally known as “high.”

Not that Indica plants lack THC, but they don’t contain quite as much. They are instead rich in Cannabidiol (CBD). Interestingly, Sativa plants don’t hold much CBD either.

Understanding Indica vs Sativa strains comes down to the two main cannabinoids: THC and CBD.

What’s a Sativa Strain?

Sativa strains are plants of the same species bred for specific effects. Growers and researchers select certain traits of cannabis Sativa and produce a variant that has these traits enhanced.

For instance, cannabis Sativa contains hundreds of terpenes and cannabinoids. When you select a group of these chemicals, you can breed a plant with specific effects.

As such, you can’t rely anymore on the old Indica, Sativa classification since most of what you get nowadays are strains bred for certain benefits.

When you want to buy at a dispensary, you’re most likely to be asked about the marijuana strain you prefer because it’s the most reliable measure for the effects you’re after.

Difference between Strains and Hybrids

Strains are variants. When you hear about Sativa or Indica strains, it just means they are varieties of the same species.

Cannabis producers breed certain Sativa plants for specific chemical profiles, which creates different strains. It’s the same case with Indica plants.

However, producers crossbreed distinct species, mostly Indica and Sativa, to create hybrids. The strains born out of these two are known as hybrids and differ from pure Sativa and Indica strains.

It’s also easier to tell apart Sativa marijuana strains from hybrids since they are still pure Sativa strains. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for combinations because you can’t determine through physical appearance if they are Indica-dominant or Sativa-dominant strains.

Popular Sativa Marijuana Strains

The most popular Sativa marijuana strains are Sativa-dominant hybrids. Pure Sativa strains are available but rare. Let’s highlight some of the most popular Sativa pure and mixture pressures.

  • Blue Dream: a hybrid, Sativa-dominant strain, Blue Dream is one of the top strains loved for its mellow effects. It has more of a “body high” than the “head high” characteristic of Sativa strains.
  • Diesel Haze: Diesel Haze is a pure Sativa strain with substantial effects. It has the typical cerebral high perfect for an energetic day. The theme is pretty fast-acting and potent.
  • Super Sour Diesel: Another pure Sativa strain, super sour diesel is known for its high THC concentration, making it one of the most muscular Sativa strains. As such, it’s probably not an ideal choice for beginners.
  • Durban Poison: An award-winning pure Sativa strain, Durban Poison is well-known for its potency. Its strong THC content can result in a very energetic, cerebral high.
  • Green Crack: Also known as Green Crush, the strain is a potent Sativa hybrid. It is Sativa-dominant, but it also has Indica effects.

Conclusion

Cannabis sativa has been used for its uplifting and energising effects throughout the ages. However, in recent years, researchers discovered the medicinal aspect of cannabis plants.

Sativa strains, in particular, enjoy much recognition due to THC and other cannabinoids. Together, these compounds effectively fight pain, inflammation, and fatigue.

Hopefully, this post has helped broaden your knowledge of Sativa marijuana strains.
