Easy Driveway Fixes You Can Do Yourself This Weekend

Abbukkhar Kangharnnia 4 min read

Your driveway does not always need a major repair. You can often repair small potholes, loose gravel, cracks, and weeds with a few basic tools in your free weekend.

If you do not fix these problems, it can make them worse. Rain can wash away loose material, water can seep into cracks and small potholes can become deep holes.

Before you spend money on a full driveway repair, check if you can handle the smaller jobs yourself.

1. Check Your Driveway for Damage

Start by walking around the entire driveway. Look for potholes, cracks, loose stones, low spots, weeds, and areas where the surface looks worn.

After rain, check the driveway. It is easier to see where water is collecting or running across the surface. Make a short list of the problems you find.

2. Fill Small Driveway Potholes

Both gravel and dirt driveways often have problems with potholes. A lot of the time, they form when water soaks into the ground and heavy traffic wears down the surface over time.

Remove loose dirt and stones from the hole before filling it. Add the fill material in small layers and pack each layer down well.

If you have a gravel driveway, fresh driveway gravel can fill shallow damaged areas and bring the surface back to a more even level.

Don’t simply throw a heap of gravel into a deep hole and call it done. The next time a car passes over the material, it may move again if it is not packed properly.

3. Rake and Level Loose Gravel

Gravel can spread over time. Car tyres push it to the sides, and rain can wash it into low spots. Use a rake to move the gravel back into place. Pull gravel from the edges and spread it over bare spots.

Then use a hand tamper to pack the gravel down. This makes the surface firm and stops ruts from forming. Regular gravel driveway maintenance can keep small problems from becoming bigger repairs.

4. Repair Small Cracks in Asphalt

Small cracks can let water into your driveway. Over time, these cracks can damage the layers underneath. First, clean the crack with a stiff brush. Remove dirt, grass, and loose pieces.

Let the area dry, then apply asphalt crack filler. Follow the instructions on the filler and smooth it out.

5. Remove Weeds From Your Driveway

Weeds can grow along the driveway edges and in small cracks. Their roots can make these weak spots worse. Pull the weeds out by hand or use a small garden tool. Damp soil makes them easier to remove.

After pulling the weeds, sweep away the loose dirt. Check the area again after a few weeks.

6. Fix Driveway Drainage Problems

Look at your driveway after a heavy rain. Check for puddles, muddy areas, or water flowing across the driving surface.

You can fix a small low spot by adding suitable material and compacting it. However, larger drainage problems may need more work.

If water keeps collecting in the same place, focus on fixing the cause.

7. Give the Driveway a Good Cleaning

Some driveway problems don’t need to be fixed. Sometimes a good cleanup will make the surface look so much better. Sweep away leaves, dirt, sticks, and loose stones. Clear debris from the edges and remove anything blocking drainage paths.

For concrete driveways, an outdoor cleaner and stiff brush remove built-up dirt. A pressure washer may also work, but use the right pressure for the surface.

8. Repair Damaged Driveway Edges

Rake loose gravel back to the edges. Add fresh material to low spots and pack it down. Keep grass and soil off the driveway to keep the edges clean.

9. Know When You Need Professional Driveway Repair

DIY repairs are useful for small problems. They are not right for every type of driveway damage. Get professional help if you have deep cracks, major sinking, severe erosion, serious drainage problems, or large sections of broken concrete or asphalt.

A driveway that keeps sinking may have a problem underneath the surface. Adding more material on top will not always solve it. You can save time and money if you know when to contact professionals.

How to Keep Your Driveway in Good Shape

You do not need to spend every weekend working on your driveway. A little regular care can go a long way. Sweep away debris, remove weeds, check for potholes, and look for standing water after heavy rain. Fix small problems before they spread.

For a gravel driveway, rake loose stones back into place, and add new gravel when the surface begins to look thin. These small jobs may only take a few hours, but they can help your driveway last longer and prevent larger repair bills.
