5 Ways to Maintain Your Home More Sustainably

Release date: 17. March 2021 Shana Yuri.

With climate change facing so many people, not to mention health and financial issues, it makes sense to continually look for ways to traverse the planet more smoothly.

Many of us would like to surround ourselves with fewer chemicals and other toxins, and reduce our energy consumption and associated costs.

You’re probably already taking steps to protect the environment with the food and beauty products you buy, but have you spent much time thinking about how you can make your home more sustainable in your daily life?

If not, it’s time to think about some important ways to make your home more environmentally friendly.

Apply additional insulation and seal gaps

Add more insulation to your home to keep it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing the need for HVAC systems. Find out how insulation Kansas city goes before making any decision. Older homes often lack insulation because it was installed many years ago and can deteriorate over time.

Add or replace insulation with modern, high-quality products to keep your home cool year-round. You can do the work yourself if you have the experience, or you can hire a contractor who specializes in insulation work.

Another way to better seal your home and make it more durable is to seal gaps around the house that have opened up over time.

For example, if you have old windows, they may not be effective if they are broken or fit poorly. Maybe it’s time to replace them with new ones. In addition, the new double glazing has better insulating properties.

Also check the areas next to the house if necessary. Look for places where air can escape, such as B. on the bottom edge and around ventilation and exhaust fans. If you have not already done so, also close off the inlets of heating, ventilation and air conditioning pipes and ducts.

Keep roof in good condition and fit solar panels

To maintain your home in the long run, you need to keep the roof in good condition. Check them after storms and usually at least once a year.

Trim branches that hang above your roof to avoid having constant debris, water, and leaves that’ll ruin your roof.

Inspect your roof regularly for any cracked or missing shingles that might affect the roof’s integrity. Regularly clean your roof of any debris, moss, and algae that might potentially cause damage.

Search online for top rated roofing companies near me or other relevant searches to find a contractor with experience in roof cleaning and repair. Ask the person you hire to pick up any old shingles or broken or missing shingles, etc. that form or could form holes.

You want a reliable roof that doesn’t leak or let in unnecessary hot or cold air.

You may want to consider installing solar panels on your roof to make your home more self-sufficient and environmentally friendly. Solar panel options have improved dramatically over the past five to ten years, and you might be surprised how many panels you need to reduce your energy bills.

Solar can be used in different ways around the house, including heating water which consumes a lot of energy.

Sorting out HVAC systems

The maintenance that should not be neglected is the maintenance of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Heating and cooling food can use a lot of gas, and the older they get, the less efficient they are.

Therefore, the equipment must be in the best possible condition through regular maintenance, so that it does not consume more energy than is necessary. They live longer if they are properly preserved, so you will consume fewer resources over time.

The maintenance involves changing the HVAC filter, keeping the outside clean, and finding holes and leaks. These issues slow down the system, thus making them overwork and consume more energy.

Hire an electrician or other qualified person to service the HVAC equipment. Your electrician will look at all the possible defects and fix what’s broken.

You don’t want to play with electrical equipment without the proper training and experience.

The contractor you choose can check your system’s ventilation, replace filters, remove dust and other contaminants, and generally take steps to keep your machine(s) running as efficiently as possible.

Use more natural products

If you want to take care of your home, it’s important to think about all the products you use. For example, avoid cleaning equipment that is loaded with chemicals that do not have good effects on the planet. Instead, opt for natural, graywater-friendly solutions made with simpler ingredients.

There are all kinds of eco-friendly cleaners on the market today, or you can make your own from things you probably already have around the house, like baking soda, salt, lemon juice and vinegar.

You can use plain water without any solution for dirt that isn’t as stubborn. For any odor around the house that can’t be removed by water, consider using baking soda. Stubborn stains on your tiles and walls can be reduced naturally with lemon. For sparkling windows, use a solution of vinegar and water.

If you must use paint, buy products with low VOC content, which are better for the planet, you and your family. When it’s time to replace bulbs, choose energy-efficient ones as well.

These are just some of the choices you can make around and for your home to become a more sustainable citizen. Remember, every little bit helps and can make a big impact in the long run.

Switch To LED Bulbs And Smart Thermostat

LED bulbs emit little heat, which translates to less energy. Installing LED light bulbs will make them environmentally friendly and offer versatility. In addition, they are eco-friendly and can last long, making them perfect in terms of sustainability.

Installing a smart thermostat will help your home become more sustainable. It reduces the heating and cooling systems by learning household patterns and adjusting accordingly. Unlike the traditional thermostat that doesn’t offer readings, the smart thermostat sends all the reading to your smartphone. As a result, if you want to keep up with your energy consumption, smart thermostats offer all those options.
