12 Different Types of Screws & Their Uses [Pictured]

It may not seem like much, but different types of screws hold literally everything together, from furniture to buildings to leisure projects.

Whether it’s an everyday object such as a wooden bench, a cupboard or a family photo on the wall, there must be a screw in it.

Although all screws have the same purpose, they are not all manufactured in the same way. There is a screw for every purpose – that’s why the screw buffet in DIY stores is so rich and so long!

It is therefore important to be familiar with the different types of screws in order to be able to choose the right screw for the job.

Different projects require different screws. If you work in construction or furniture making, if you are a passionate hobbyist or if you just repair your house very often, you probably already know some of these screws.

12 Screw types

Sometimes, if you look online, you see people talking about the more than 35 types of screw heads, but then you read and they describe different types of screw heads and then each small subspecies.

In fact, there are only 9 basic types of screws. The other classifications are based on bolt size, material and bolt head and are not really important classifications. Now let’s look at the base.

Wood screws

Guess what material these screws are made of! Wood screws are usually made of bronze, brass or steel and are used specifically for woodworking.

Their opaque stems at the end and their thick strands at the pointed end make them easy to identify.

The design is not just for identification purposes – it ensures that the screw passes smoothly through the wood fibres without excessive fragmentation (fragmentation is reduced by minimising resistance).

Wood screws can have flat, oval or round heads. Flat heads are an important fastening element in cases where screws need to be concealed or aligned with the surface of the wood.

Oval heads or pots are slightly more visible than flat heads, while round heads are most visible and are therefore used for decorative purposes. I used all kinds of wood screws that I had stored randomly in a drawer with the tray of my improvised Adirondack chair.

Drywall screws

Gypsum board screws are designed for gypsum panels and are of two basic types: coarse or threaded screws, which are used to fix gypsum board to wood, or fine threaded screws or threaded screws, which are used to fix metal bolts to gypsum board.

It is also equipped with a self-drilling point, so you do not have to pre-drill. Plasterboard screws cut through the plasterboard like a hot knife, thanks to the super-sharp points that reduce stripping during a quick entry.

There are many types of screws for plasterboard, for example. B. Coated with zinc, phosphate or ceramic and some are designed to reduce corrosion. They also work well with plasterboard alternatives.

Self tapping screws

Self-tapping screws are screws that do not need to be pre-drilled because the thread makes it easier to drill the hole when the screw is inserted. These can be screws for plasterboard, wood or sheet metal.

However, the problem with these screws is that when you remove them, the screw breaks. They break as easily as they are sharpened.

Plate screws

Sheet metal screws can be used in all cases where different materials need to be assembled, whether rubber, plastic, metal or any type of plywood.

That’s why sheet metal screws are available in many shapes and sizes, and the material you work with determines which screw you use.

Types A, B and AB are the most common and widely used sheet metal screws, while type 25 is used less frequently and for special purposes, usually with plastic. They are also supplied with various hexagonal, flat and oval rings.

The sheet metal screws are extremely effective thanks to their unique sharp thread that ensures a firm grip.

Freemasonry screws

Masonry screws, also called plugs, are easily distinguished from the rest of the family by the lack of a pointed end. Therefore, masonry screws are not designed for drilling and ergonomics, pre-drilling is required (although a hammer drill is recommended for conventional drilling).

These screws are used to fix concrete to wood or metal. One of the most common applications is fixing wooden planks on a basement floor or concrete foundation.

Masonry screws may have crossheads or raised hexagon heads, which require matching hexagon heads (the required bit and size is indicated on the packaging).

MDF screw

Medium-density fibreboard screws are often used in houses for mouldings, cornices, shelves and bookcases (especially those that need to be fitted).

These screws are very strong because MDF is a harder material than solid wood and difficult to penetrate. The use of wood screws on MDF will in most cases cause cracks, unless you first drill the hole and then use a normal wood screw.

MDF screws make your life easier, especially if you use self-tapping screws. By their nature, MDF screws make pre-drilling and the appearance of chips superfluous. They have star-shaped heads and are available in the same dimensions as conventional wood screws.

Fastening screw

Decking screws are usually used to install or fasten decking boards or decking planks to a support system. So these screws are designed to be recessed, i.e. they are flat or very deep beneath the surface of the wood.

Deck screws are similar to wood screws in that they have a coarse thread and a smooth upper shaft. They are also resistant to corrosion and rust – another characteristic that wood screws have in common.

Only use ACQ-compatible deck screws for pressure-treated wood deck boards. For composite decks, most manufacturers specify the use of stainless steel cover plates for installation.

Deck screws are available in different lengths depending on use and many are self-tapping.

Eye bolts

Dowel screws, also known as double-sided screws (for obvious reasons) and wooden threaded rods, do not have a head, but delayed threads at both ends that run towards a blunt core.

These screws are designed to be placed in pre-drilled guide holes, but can also be placed in wood without a guide hole because of the thread.

The nails are generally used to join or fasten two pieces of wood together. Therefore, they are often used in the manufacture of furniture, the assembly of surfaces, continuous joints and other woodworking applications, especially when blind holes and concealed single fasteners are used.

The absence of a head means that a drive tool or a spare clamp is required for installation.

Mirror screw

These are special screws with which you can attach your mirrors to the walls without extra supports. The mirror screws have a countersunk head with a screw hole; this allows the supplied covers to be screwed on, which makes installation easier and gives an elegant finish.

The mirror screws are also fitted with conical rubber sleeves. They prevent the screws from sinking directly into the mirror.

All screws and lids are galvanized and therefore stainless. This means that these screws can also be used in humid areas such as wet rooms. B. The bathrooms can be used without any problems.

Chipboard screws

Also known as two-head screws and chipboard screws, chipboard screws, as the name suggests, are self-tapping screws specially designed for chipboard.

Thanks to the coarse thread pitch, which is twice as large as that of standard wood screws, they can easily be driven into chipboard, hardboard and fibreboard of different densities.

Thanks to a sufficient thread, they can also be easily used with conventional drive bits and manual screwdrivers. The self-centering tip of the screw also ensures that the screw is straight and reduces the risk of creating cracks in the agglomerate.

Safety screws

Also called safety screws, safety screws are more or less standard screws; however, they have unique heads, which makes it impossible for normal tools to remove these screws.

In this way, any screw that you cannot remove with a Phillips head or slotted screwdriver automatically becomes a safety screw.

However, mankind has always found a way around this, making safety screws not really safe anymore, thanks to the innovative spirit of those who invented the screwdriver bits to get through each screw.

Although the problem may not be related to the safety screws themselves, the abundance of screw bits is undoubtedly a problem.

Hammer impact screws

Socket head screws, also known as U-bolts, slotted screws or plain socket head screws, are designed for high-strength fixing applications. Their rounded heads and unique design make them strong and durable products that you will enjoy for a long time.

Hammerhead screws are typically used for fixing signs to walls, factory panels or other similar applications. They also have multiple threaded starter holes and large propeller angles, as well as an illegible pilot point.

You can use hammers, hammers or hammers to tighten these screws quickly and permanently. You may need a smaller pre-drilled pilot bit, and the screw must be made of a harder material than the part you are going to screw it into.

Screw types for every question!

Screws are available in abundance, for every need and every use of a screw. With this specific purpose in mind, it is important to know what types of screws are needed, when they are needed and how best to use them.

We hope this primer on screw types will enlighten you on the subject and that you will not choose the wrong screws for your next building project.
