How to Calculate the Amount of Mortar You Need

Gary Cripps April 16, 2021 5 min read

In masonry, mortar plays an important role as a binding agent for joining blocks and bricks. Running out of grout before the end of the project can disrupt your schedule and affect the quality of your work. Too much grout can also lead to wastage. So how many mortars do I need? Most people ask themselves this question before hiring a professional. You need to calculate the number of bags of mortar mixture before you start laying bricks and blocks. Determine the number of joint bags based on the size and scope of your project. But before you hire a professional or start calculating how much grout you’ll need, consider the following tips to make sure your estimate is accurate and your project goes smoothly.

Having a vision

According to Inchcaldulator.com, it is important that you take the time to reflect on what you should have done and what you consider a successful project. Also think about the priorities you want to give to the project. If you want new flooring, take the time to think about the rooms you want to put new flooring in or the materials you prefer to use. Don’t forget to think about what’s essential: Is the main goal linked to a specific price? Is it a particular point of view? Is the quality of the installation or the durability of the materials the most important thing? The answers to these questions can help you get an accurate assessment that meets your needs and interests.

Obtaining multiple assessments from different specialists

Once you have an idea of what you want to achieve with your project, it’s time to ask for quotes. Start by finding a few reliable contractors in your area. Consult friends and family members to find reputable experts. It is important to obtain different estimates for comparison purposes. Make sure each quote includes the items on your priority list, not just the value. It can also help you find a professional to work with and exclude those who can’t be trusted.

Request for liaison officer

Ask your contractor for testimonials or references from clients they have worked for in the past. This will give you a clear picture of the people you are dealing with and the quality of their work.

Ensure they are licensed and insured

Before you hire a professional, make sure they are licensed and insured to do construction work. If necessary, they should be approved for testing. An insured professional guarantees that he or she will be able to recover the costs incurred in the event of a problem.

Estimate of required quantity of solution from

Here are three steps to help you estimate the mortar mix needed for your project, including:

  • Step one: Estimating the Area of the Project – Measure the height and width in feet to estimate the area of the wall. Once you have the measurement, multiply the height and width to get a square foot. If you are not comfortable making calculations by hand, try a calculator to make the process easier and faster.
  • Step two: Determine the number of blocks needed – Calculate the total number of blocks needed by the number of blocks per square foot. To estimate the total number of blocks needed, calculate 1 1/8 standard blocks per square foot by 1.125. You can also use various online block calculators to find the dimensions of other blocks.
  • Step three: Mortar estimation – Determine the mortar yield in the last step and divide the number of blocks by the yield. An 80 pound bag from an average mortal can yield 12 blocks. So you can divide the total square feet by 12.

How to estimate mortar for the Brickproject ?

The same steps above can be used to obtain the exact mortar needed for a brick project.

  • Step one: Determine total square feet – Start by estimating the square footage of a brick wall by multiplying the height by the width.
  • Step two: Calculate the total number of bricks – Multiply the number of bricks per square foot by the area. Most online brick calculators can help you. To determine the number of bricks needed, you will need approximately 6.9 modular bricks per square foot multiplied by the square foot.
  • Step three: Mortar estimation – Divide the total number of bricks by the yield of the mixture to estimate the mortar required. Since the average mortar mix contains 36 bricks per 80-pound bag, divide the number of bricks by 36 to get the number of bags needed. Experts recommend adding at least 10% more material to account for broken blocks and cuts.

Types of solutions

If you are using an on-site mixed or prefabricated mortar, it is important to know the different types of mortar that are available and appropriate for your project. According to (https://www.inchcalculator.com/brick-calculator/), the cement/sand ratio is about one part cement to three to four parts sand. This depends on the desired compressive strength and the type of mortar to be mixed.

Most mixtures require lime in various proportions, which acts as a binder to extend the life of the finished product and increase the workability of the mixture.

  • Type O – Professionals use it in non-supporting ground applications. It is primarily used for indoor applications and has a total strength of 350 psi.
  • Type N – Most contractors use this for overhead applications to carry light loads. Mainly used in chimneys or masonry. Total resistance is 750 psi.
  • Type S – professionals use it underground for load-bearing structures, mainly for retaining walls and foundations. The compressive strength is 1800 psi.
  • Type M – Mainly used for civil engineering works to support heavy structures. It is designed to support foundations and is estimated at 2,500 pounds per square inch.

It is important to note that bricks come in different shapes and sizes. So if you want to estimate how much mortar you will need, you must first determine the size of the bricks.
