Everything You Need to Know about Garage Door Springs and Their Replacement

Gary Cripps December 25, 2020 5 min read

If you have a garage, chances are you’ll use it without thinking about protecting your car from different weather conditions. Not to mention the fact that it is a fantastic storage space!

As an Amazon Assistant, I earn my money through qualifying purchases.

But this image of happiness can quickly be destroyed by a broken garage door spring. This essential part (or several parts, depending on the type and size of the garage door) ensures smooth opening and closing of the door.

When they’re brought down, the feathers get tense. When you want to open the door, the tension is released and the springs help to lift the door.

Sometimes this mechanism fails. So you need to act quickly to use the garage safely.

In this article you will find answers to important questions about garage door springs and what to look out for when replacing them. Without further ado, let’s go!

Garage door spring type

Your garage is equipped with one of two types of suspension systems:

  • The extension spring system consists of two springs located on either side of the garage door track. When the door is in motion, they expand and contract using ropes and pulleys.
  • The torsion spring system uses one or two spiral springs, depending on the size of the garage door. The springs have cable drums at both ends and are mounted horizontally on a steel shaft parallel to the door, which serves as a counterweight. According to the experts at Garage A1, it is more expensive and complicated to install, but it lasts longer and is considered safer.

Why do garage door springs break?

Some of the most common aspects are longevity and the number of ascending and descending cycles. Most garage door springs break due to excessive tension when the door is lowered or closed.

Remember never to go under a moving garage door, because if the springs break, they can collapse and injure you.

Are garage door springs expensive?

Depending on the type of this item you pay a different price. A tension spring costs $20 to $50 and a torsion spring $30 to $100.

Don’t forget that even with a two-spring system where only one spring is broken, it is best to replace both springs at the same time. This is more cost-effective and also improves the functionality and balance of your garage door.

Professional or do-it-yourself repair?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as prices vary depending on the type of spring and whether you want to carry out the repair yourself or hire a professional. In general, the average range is between $150 and $300. Let’s look at the two options:

Do-it-yourself costs

If you want to repair the springs yourself, all you have to do is buy a set of springs. However, it is a dangerous process and if you do not have the necessary knowledge, you could be seriously injured. That’s why you may need to pay more and buy tools that give you peace of mind and help you get the job done. If you are an amateur, the repair will also take longer.

Professional replacement costs

Hiring a professional might seem like the best option, especially if you’re not sure if you can do it safely.

Replacement costs depend on the type of spring, the type of service you need, your location and the company you choose.

This means that replacing a torsion spring costs $140 to $270 for a single torque and $200 to $350 for a double torque.

Replacing an extension with a spring costs between $120 and $160 for a single extension, while replacing a double extension costs between $160 and $200.

How long will they last?

In addition to the cost, you may wonder how long the garage door springs will last and how long it will take to replace them if necessary. We have the answer to both questions!

Starch

It depends on the type of sources and can be divided into years or into ascending and descending cycles. Torsion springs generally last 7 to 14 years or 10,000 to 20,000 up and down cycles, depending on how often the garage door is used.

Extension springs, on the other hand, have a lifespan of 4 to 10 years or 5,000 to 15,000 cycles. Then experts recommend replacing them with torsion springs.

Garage door spring replacement time

A professional can replace a broken garage door spring in 30 minutes to 1 hour. If you’re doing it for the first time, you might need more.

Bottom line

It is up to you to decide whether you want to replace one or more defective garage door springs yourself or whether you want to hire a professional to do it for you.

Remember, if it doesn’t take long to replace a broken spring, it can be difficult if you’ve never done it before.

In addition, this process can be dangerous because your garage door can close quite suddenly without a properly functioning set of springs. In this respect, it might be best to call a professional and have the repair carried out. It will be more expensive, but also safer.
