Welcome to our guide to concrete kitchen countertops, presenting the most common finishes, costs, do-it-yourself tips and pros and cons.

If you want to transform rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, or even outdoor spaces, a good way to do that is to replace your sink. However, there are a few things to take into account when rebuilding and replacing your kitchen counter. From costs to style and the pros and cons of the materials used, many factors play a role.

When considering buying certain kitchen worktops, you want to make sure you make an informed choice. In this guide we explain everything you need to know about this attention-grabbing style!

Concrete counterparts

If you are looking for new countertops, concrete countertops are an excellent choice. They have two important features that kitchen worktops need: They are heat and scratch resistant.

This is very important in an area where there is a lot of traffic, and many of the elements installed there are hot. If you place a hot pan on a concrete counter top, you are unlikely to suffer any permanent damage.

Concrete worktops are also relatively easy to clean. That way you don’t have to ask yourself questions for hours after you’ve prepared a big meal. Another reason why concrete countertops are such a good choice is of course that they are aesthetically pleasing.

Zenkertop Concrete

One of the great advantages of concrete countertops is that they differ more in appearance than you think. One way to see how different concrete countertops can be is to look at the different finishes intended for them. The most common options are polished, acid colored or colored concrete countertops. Another option is the use of a concrete countertop for the ceiling.

Polished concrete cutters

Polished concrete countertops are the best choice if you want your kitchen to look clean and modern. They offer a smooth finish thanks to intensive sanding and polishing of the surface.

If you are interested in a perfectly smooth design, you can also opt for a concrete counter top as a single slab. This avoids the seams that occur when two boards come together and ensures a clean surface.

Concrete anchor

Tinted concrete counter tops are a great way to add colour to a concrete counter top to make it more dynamic. Concrete naturally tends to have a grey slate when dry. By painting the concrete counter top during installation, you can check the appearance of the concrete surface.

But it is also not limited to one pigment. You can add pattern pigments to imitate the look of other materials such as marble or granite. We’ll talk about that again when we look at the concrete countertop options.

Recessed hole for concrete paving

The concept behind concrete counter tops is simple. If you don’t want to spend the time and money on completely replacing your current kitchen counter. It’s also often easier, saving you time renovating your kitchen if you’re in trouble.

Concrete ridges are relatively cheap because they use a thinner layer of concrete than a full concrete countertop. They move at a much lower price of about $1.15 per square meter. The installation costs may generally depend on the material of the countertop you have at that time, as well as any additional repairs required prior to the application of the concrete coating.

These diapers are often just as versatile. No matter what kind of kitchen counter you have right now, you are likely to find a cover to suit your needs.

ConcreteAcidic Zenkertops

Acid tinting is another way to check the pigment in a concrete countertop. However, instead of a dye, acid etching uses materials such as hydrochloric acid and metal salts to etch the surface of concrete. This works because the acid triggers a reaction when it comes into contact with the hydrated lime in the concrete.

Many owners like this choice because the answer is consistent. No matter how long you have had your concrete countertop, these patterns will not flake or fade.

The only major disadvantage of acid-coloured concrete countertops is that there is less control over pigmentation. You are likely to get more neutral shades, but the choice of colour is limited compared to other pigment methods.

Wrong concrete counter elements

If you like the look of concrete countertops, but do not want to commit to their cost, then choosing fake concrete countertops may be a better choice. This is a great way to save money, and is often done as a do-it-yourself project that gives you a great opportunity to add a personal and unique touch to your home.

You can also install a concrete counter top with a fake finish. This design has almost unlimited possibilities. You can install concrete and make it look like other materials such as wood, granite or marble countertops. This is an excellent way to exploit other materials that are more expensive or not otherwise available.

Coloured concrete counter elements

As with many other finishes, you can count on a variety of pigments to make your concrete countertop stand out. It changes the standard grey color that most people associate with concrete. Here are some of your colour options and their advantages.

Black concrete anchor points

Black concrete countertops are not a traditional choice, but they adapt to almost any style of decor. Whether it’s contrasting white cabinets or a warm wood theme in your kitchen, this colour matches perfectly.

This is a particularly wise choice if you want to add a unique and modern touch to your kitchen. Just like soapstone countertops, black concrete countertops are often installed by professionals. However, it is possible to use a concrete place as a do-it-yourself project. Concrete stain is sometimes called stain.

Newly placed concrete must be cured for at least 30 days before the enamel is added. Concrete stains do not fade in sunlight like many types of acids and dyes. It’s also wear-resistant.

When the kitchen is clean and tidy, white countertops can provide a clean look. After all, who can complain about shiny white counters?

The only unfortunate side effect of a white counter top is that the clutter is easily visible. If you put pasta sauce on a white counter, it is easy to recognize. Fortunately, concrete countertops are easy to clean when problems arise.

See our gallery of white granite countertops for more details on each project.

Concrete worktops, like other types, are highly absorbent and must be sealed to prevent stains and cracks.

Concrete anchor points Costs

Concrete countertops are a fairly expensive choice. On average you can expect to pay between $65 and $135 per square meter. This price takes into account the materials to be used, the design you choose and the labour and installation costs.

The cost of a concrete countertop usually does not come from the material alone, because concrete is not as expensive as estimated here. The final price depends more on the skills of the person who creates it.

That’s why it often costs more if you want a more labour-intensive design for your counters. The more creative the look of your kitchen counter, the more it will cost you to use it.

Do-it-yourself concrete worktops costs

When you make your own concrete countertops, you can really save on total costs. That’s because you don’t have to pay for the work and expertise. In the end, you do the work of installing the concrete pile and finishing it yourself.

When these labour costs are deducted, you can expect a much lower price. You only have to pay the standard price of $8 to $15 per square meter of sink.

Here, too, factors other than the required amount of concrete have an influence. For example by pressing

Advantages and disadvantages of concrete countertops

As with any DIY project, you need to weigh up the pros and cons when installing concrete countertops in your home.

On the positive side, concrete countertops are beautiful. They are available in different colours and finishes, and you can even add materials such as stones, shells, broken glass or fiberglass to concrete to add variety.

Because they can be made to measure, you don’t have to worry that they won’t fit in your home. They are also robust, durable and easy to clean. As I said, they are also good for the kitchen, because they handle heat well.

Unfortunately, as we just pointed out, concrete countertops can be expensive. They are also difficult to repair if they crack and need to be sealed every year to ensure that they remain in good condition. You must also ensure that the floors and frames of the cabinets you have are strong enough to support the concrete.

However, these efforts could be beneficial in the long term. Even when you market your home, concrete countertops add value to your home when properly installed and maintained.

Concrete elements Vs. granite

A choice that is usually compared to a concrete counter top is the option of a granite counter top. How do these two options relate to each other?

Well, both can withstand high temperatures, but kitten can discolour, for example. B. a hot pot is placed on the surface. However, both must be sealed.

In terms of price range, they tend to fall into the same general category, but at about $70 to $175 per square meter, granite is probably more expensive.

Moreover, compared to granite worktops, concrete is less prone to stains and offers unlimited design possibilities. Although granite has many of these materials, it is not as sensitive to additional pigmentation or added materials such as inlays such as concrete.

Concrete is also grout-free as long as you use grout during installation, while granite is likely to have joints.

Concrete also ages, which means that its appearance is likely to become unique over time. Granite has a static appearance.

Self-constructing concrete counter elements

If you want to save money and give your home a do-it-yourself experience, a concrete worktop can be a valuable project.

First you have to make a mould for the concrete countertop. Don’t forget to follow our advice on which concrete is safe for work surfaces to get the best results.

You also have to make sure that you build the right supports for the meter, because concrete is a heavy material. Below you will find the dimensions of your concrete counter top for do-it-yourself use.

Concrete thickness with counterpart

Concrete is a heavy material, if your counter top is too thick, you make the base, the cabinets under the counter top and the floor heavier.

The average size of the tabletops varies between one and two centimetres. If you want your countertop to look thicker than two centimetres, you’d better choose a lowered front edge that gives the illusion of extra thickness rather than adding extra weight that adds more concrete.

Concrete Concrete mix

If you want to turn your new concrete countertop into a do-it-yourself project, you can’t just take the first concrete mixture you see on the shelf. Concrete that you could use for a path in your garden may not be suitable for a kitchen counter.

It is best to look for a concrete mix specially designed for countertops. In this way, the mixture used gives the aesthetic and technical result you need for an attractive and functional concrete countertop. Quikrete Countertop Mix (#1106-80) is often used as a mix for precast concrete worktops.

Concrete converter

Installing concrete counter tops as part of a do-it-yourself project requires a range of tools and materials. It can seem overwhelming to put them all together, so it’s useful to have all the basics in one kit.

These kits usually contain the components needed to mix the concrete for the counter tops. After all, you can’t just use a concrete mix to create a beautiful counter top. In addition to concrete countertop kits, we are looking at specific types of concrete that can later be used for countertops.

Overall, concrete countertops can save you a lot of time and stress when it comes to concrete countertops for your renovation project.

Concrete Counterweight Sealant

To keep your concrete countertops spotlessly clean, make sure they are properly sealed. You should also close once a year to avoid problems such as stains.

To seal your countertop, first make sure it is in the right place. This is best done in a space suitable for countertops. However, you do not want to move air or dust, so do not point the fan at the workplace.

It is also necessary to dilute the putty in a ratio of 30% putty to 70% water. A 100% sealant is difficult to process.

Now use a cotton cloth to clean the concrete surface only with water. If the concrete has been pre-sanded and sealed, use petroleum ether to remove the wax. Then wipe the entire meter with a clean cloth until the concrete has turned black.

When applying the sealant, do so in thin layers – think of the pattern you use when spraying furniture.

To apply it, take a cloth and let it soak in the solution you made by diluting the sealant. Now wipe the counter, but start at the edges and work your way in. Apply the solution generously by hand and stir the area with the moving cloth for about five minutes.

Keep in mind, however, that you will have to work quickly, especially if you want to seal a large worktop. Once the sealant begins to dry and takes on a gelatinous consistency, it will be more difficult to work. This can also lead to problems such as stripping in this scene.

When you are finished, start wiping the countertop sealant, but make sure you use the same cloth. This ensures that a thin layer of clean sealant remains on the countertop to dry.

Then let it dry overnight and try a method called a drop test in the morning. Pour a little water on the sink and let it soak for 10 minutes. If the meter goes dark when you wipe it, it’s not locked properly. If yes, repeat the steps to seal the sink until it passes the test.

Frequently asked questions about concrete meters

What is the best concrete for kitchen worktops?

If you need concrete countertops, you can’t settle for just anything. The most common concrete you will find at your local hardware store is Quickcrete or a similar product. It is designed for quick drying and installation, but not for use on countertops. Using it exposes you to an increased risk of shrinkage, twisting, or cracking of the counter top.

Instead, look for an option specifically recommended for concrete countertops. It’s fairly easy to find – it’s available online, but also at many home care chains such as Lowe’s and Home Depot.

If you use conventional concrete, which is not the best choice, you should use additives to reduce the risk of shrinkage or cracking.

Can you grind concrete counter elements?

Yeah! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! In fact, it is an important step in grinding concrete countertops. Once the concrete is dry – which takes about three days – it can be sanded with a standard hand sander or any orbital sander.

To allow the sealant to adhere properly to the new concrete counter top, use 200-220 grit sandpaper. It is also important to replace the sandpaper every ten square metres to ensure that it continues to provide the friction you need. The more sandpaper you use, the weaker the grain. So if you take advantage of it, the results you see are reduced.

Grinding concrete is not the same as grinding wood. The reason you sand the concrete is to expose the holes in the concrete.

How do you repair rough concrete buttresses?

The last thing you want is a concrete countertop that looks rough. Fortunately, if your concrete countertop is more than a little uneven, you can take steps to smooth it out.

First, let’s look at the best ways to avoid rough counters. The most common source is heredity. This phenomenon is called when a steel trowel is used too early on the concrete. This allows moisture to be absorbed into the concrete, resulting in an irregular texture. In addition, the cream layer of the concrete must be sanded before sealing to prevent an increased risk of cracking.

Also make sure that you fill all low points with concrete before the concrete dries up. Otherwise you may have an uneven surface that is difficult to repair after drying and curing.

If you notice irregularities after drying the concrete, you should sand and polish it. The best way to do this is to use a wet polishing machine and use it with polishing plates or a diamond grinding wheel. The tool you need depends on the seriousness of the situation. Start with the weakest grain and increase the number if necessary. Usually you need at least 200 pellets, but you have to start with 60.

You can also apply a thin layer. This means that an extra layer has to be added to obtain a new, smoother top. If you want better results, you should use a special option, such as microfilling instead of ordinary concrete.

You can also use epoxy countertops. Epoxy is a versatile tool, and you can even add pigments to change its appearance.
